초록

본고에서는 현재 독립기념관에 소장 중인 ‘서찰’(한시)이 과연 단재의 것인지를 고증하였다. 우선 한시에 나온 ‘4년 동안 숙사(塾師) 생활’과 ‘팔순 대고모(大姑母)’ 부분을 살펴보았다. 단재는 1895년 결혼을 했고, 1898년에 성균관에 입교했다. 단재의 삶으로 볼 때 1893-1897년에 숙사 생활도 어렵다. 게다가 단재에게는 대고모가 존재하지 않았다. 한시의 내용으로 보면 시적 화자가 적어도 10년 이전의 경험을 그려낸 것이다. 그렇게 보면 1880년 후반 무렵 숙사를 한 것인데, 이는 단재가 10살 이전부터 숙사를 했다는 말이 된다. 그리고 한시는 수신제가(修身齊家)를 중시하지만, 단재는 애국을 중시하는 문학을 주장했다. 형식의 측면에서도 한시는 단재의 증시(贈詩)나 서신과 다르다. 아울러 한시는 시적 화자의 태도, 인용하는 방식, 서체 등에서도 단재와 현저한 차이를 드러내고 있다. 이런 점들을 종합해 보면, 오언배율은 단재가 지은 작품이 아니라는 결론에 이른다. 또 다른 신채호(동명이인)의 작품이거나, 다른 사람의 글에다가 신채호의 이름을 갖다 붙인 가짜이다. 이제 이 서찰을 단재의 시로 규정해서는 안 된다. 단재의 이름을 내건 가짜들이 횡행하는 것을 절대 용납해서는 안 되며, 단재 정신의 훼손을 막기 위해서라도 철저히 가려내야 한다. 

Abstract

In this study, I investigated the authenticity of a Chinese poem, which is currently housed in the Independence Hall of Korea, known as Shin Chae-ho’s letter. First, I looked through two facts from the poem; ‘4 years of home tutoring’ and ‘80-year-old Grandaunt’. Danjae got married in 1895 and joined Sungkyunkwan School in 1898. This is why it is unlikely that Danjae had tutored between 1893-1897. Moreover, Danjae didn’t have any grandaunt. According to the contents of the Chinese poem, the speaker describes the experience at least 10 years ago. In that sense, the poem is based on tutoring experience in the late 1880s, which means Danjae started tutoring even before when he was 10 years old. Moreover, the Chinese poem’s speaker emphasized cultivating himself and governing his family together while Danjae emphasized on patriotism in his literature. In terms of the form, this poem is different from Danjae’s form of letter or poem given to a person. Furthermore, the poetic speaker’s citation and handwriting style showed a significant difference from Danjae’s. To sum up these points, it leads to the conclusion that this Chinese poem is not written by Danjae. This poem is a forgery or a work written by another author named Shin Chae-ho. That is why it should no longer be defined as Danjae’s work. Forgeries named after Danjae should never be allowed, and they should be thoroughly screened and eradicated to prevent damage to Danjae’s spirit.
