초록

본고에서는 단재의 저술에 나타난 영토의식을 논의했다. 단재는 애국계몽기부터 역사 연구에 진력했다. 그가 애국전기를 쓴 것도 역사 인식의 일환이었다. 그는 역사 기술에 있어서 ‘영토 지리’에 주목하였으며, 그래서 이전 역사가들이 우리 영토를 축소하거나 엉뚱하게 말한 것들을 비판하였다. 중국에 머물 당시 중국인들의 잘못된 역사의식도 비판하며 바로잡으려고 노력했다. ｢만리장성｣이라는 글은 그러한 관점에서 쓰여졌다. 특히 단재는 1910년대 연해주, 만주 등지를 광범위하게 답사하고 우리의 고대 강역을 획정하려고 노력했다. 그는 고조선의 영토가 연해주, 만주 등지에 이르렀으며, 고구려 역시 봉천, 직예, 몽고 일부를 영유했다고 하였다. 아울러 백제가 중국 요서(遼西) 지역을 경략하였다는 대륙 경략설을 주장했다. 또한 발해를 우리의 역사에 편입시켜 기술했으며, 고려 역시 두만강 이북 공험진을 영유했음을 언급했다. 이러한 것들은 중국의 각종 문헌들을 읽고 실증적으로 제시한 것이다. 단재의 영토지리에 대한 인식은 ｢꿈하늘｣에 잘 드러난다. 단재는 이 작품에서 우리의 고토를 회복하자는 다물정신을 잘 드러내고 있다. 그것은 개인이 민족 주체로 거듭나 궁극적으로 ‘아와 비아의 투쟁’에서 승리하는 것이다. 단재의 역사 연구는 고토에 대한 인식과 회복 염원을 보여준다. 우리도 역사를 바르게 인식하고 지리 강역을 실증적으로 밝혀낼 필요가 있다.

Abstract

This paper discussed the territorial perception that appeared in Shin Chae-ho's writings. He devoted himself to study history from the time of the patriotic enlightenment. The patriotic biographies he wrote were also a part of his perception of history. He paid attention to 'territorial geography' in his historical description, and that is why he criticized previous historians for speaking out of context and reducing Korean territory. During his stay in China, Danjae also criticized the wrong perception of the history of Chinese people and tried to correct it. His "The Great Wall of China" was written from such a perspective. In particular, Danjae expedited extensively to Maritime Provinces and Manchuria in the 1910s and tried to define Korean ancient territory. He asserted that the territory of Gojoseon reached Primorsky Kray and Manchuria, and Goguryeo also possessed the parts of Bongcheon, Jikye and Mongolia. In addition, Baekje governed the Liaoseo region of China. He also described Balhae as part of Korean history and mentioned that Goryeo possessed Gongheomjin, the north region of the Tumen River. He read such things in various Chinese literature and presented them empirically. Danjae's perception of territorial geography is well revealed in the "Dream Heaven". In this work, Danjae clearly shows the Damul spirit to restore old home territory. It means the individual is reborn as a national subject and ultimately wins the 'fight between Self and Non-self.' Danjae's historical studies reveal the perception and desire for the recovery of Korea old territory. We also need to recognize history properly and identify geographical territory empirically.
